Turkish warplanes bombed 21 targets belonging to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq, the military said in a written statement posted on its official Web site yesterday.
The move came as part of a large aerial campaign following a deadly attack by the PKK that killed 17 Turkish troops. It said the jets struck the PKK's targets in the Avashin-Basyan region in northern Iraq as well as the Buzul and Iki Yaka mountains in Turkey's Southeast.
The planes returned safely to base after successfully completing their mission, the statement said, without giving further details. In a separate statement, the military said two more PKK members were killed late Monday during the operations. "The total number of neutralized terrorists increased to 25," it said.
The raid was the fourth strike against PKK hideouts inside Iraq since the Oct. 3 attack on the Aktütün station near the Iraq border.
Meanwhile, Parliament will discuss the motion to extend the parliamentary authorization to launch cross-border operations into northern Iraq today. The motion is expected to be approved as it is supported by the majority of the political parties. The current mandate expires Oct. 17. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan yesterday called all his deputies to be in Parliament during the deliberations and voting.
Before the parliamentary meeting, Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ is expected to pay courtesy visits to both Erdoğan and main opposition leader Deniz ******. He will visit the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, on Friday.
